The Universal Appeal Of An Evergreen Tree
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Once, I asked a professional landscape artist this question: "what are the characteristics of the finest tree that anyone can add to their lawn or garden?"

Her answer was clear as it was succinct. "Three words," she said, "sturdiness, color and size."

There are many kinds of trees that can be considered for a variety of gardens and lawns. The trick, of course, is to find the right tree type that would suit the needs of a particular area. The possibilities can be as diverse as the weather conditions, the distinct preferences, the soil type, the landscaping plan and the environmental factors that vary from one garden or lawn to the next.

Nonetheless, some trees do possess general qualities that make the universally desirable options to provide the much needed landscape lift. One such type is the evergreen tree.

There are many varieties of an evergreen tree, but generally, they are great landscape pillars throughout the year. Whether they be exposed to the scorching heat of the summer, or the biting cold of winter, this tree will most certainly endure. They are hardy. They are big enough to provide structural and aesthetic support for any garden or lawn. And most importantly, they will never fail to brighten up the environment with the unceasing explosions of green they will produce.

Indeed, evergreens are known for their needle-like leaves that do not wither nor fall off easily. Evergreens can retain their foliage all year long. This has made this tree type a great choice for Christmas trees, as their needle-like leaves take on a shade of white once snow accumulates in between the spaces of the same.

Caring for the evergreen tree is not as menial as the care demanded by other trees. Here are some simple tips that will help you make the most out of this tree type.

* Evergreens love mulches. Water retention is important for them, especially when they have just been transplanted. They need water, and often, lots of it, to firmly establish themselves in their new location.

* Though they are perfect for most weathers, evergreens will benefit the most from being exposed to full sunlight. If you want rich colors on their leaves, make sure that they will be positioned in places where they will receive an ample supply of the sun's glorious rays.

* Some types of evergreens can grow up to 60 feet tall. Do plan available space before deciding on transplanting this kind of tree in your backyard.

Evergreens make great investments, given the three qualities that a great garden tree should possess.
